This tour touches all the bases and includes history, geography, nature & culture. This set amidst magnificent scenery - lochs, glens, wonderful woodlands and wild moorlands – will result in a truly memorable day out.
The trip will start from Perth and as far as possible stay off the main road – the A9. We will head north towards the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve near Dunkeld to admire the magnificent ospreys which nest there every summer. We will then go for a stroll either to Lady Charlottes Cave – where the Duke of Atholl allegedly kept a concubine! – or to a viewpoint beside the Hermitage to appreciate the stunning scenery of the area.
From here we will continue north to Killiecrankie – site of a major battle in 1689. Here the Jacobites (an alliance of the Clans) defeated the Government troops. The Jacobites had camped overnight before the battle at Blair Castle and that is the next stop on this tour.
The castle is steeped in history dating back to the 12th century. It is the ancestral seat of the Duke of Atholl and the regimental headquarters of the world famous Atholl Highlanders – the only private army in Europe.
A tour of the castle is highly recommended.
After the castle we will head for the solitude of the moors. Here we will hopefully spot red deer and a wide variety of bird life including golden eagles.
We will then head west through truly breathtaking scenery to Kenmore and lovely Loch Tay. It is now time to head south again towards Perth but not directly. We will climb out of Kenmore via a steep and winding road which affords wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Once over the top we drop down to the Sma’ Glen, a narrow steep sided glen where they have found evidence of Roman lookout posts along the glen’s crest.
It is only about 15 miles back to Perth from here and the tours destination. You will have seen and tasted the very best Perthshire has to offer and you won’t be disappointed!
We will recommend refreshment and lunch stops along the way as required.
